Announcing the 2022 IMPART Artist Grants

QAIC launches our second iteration of the IMPART Artist Grants. This year, the theme chosen is “Sustainability & the Arts.” The challenges posed by climate change, rising pollution levels, and the destruction of vital wildlife habitats threaten the foundations which sustain us all.

This year, we want interested artists to radically rethink how art is made and how the public can be convinced to both prioritize and incorporate the concept of sustainability into their daily lives.

QAIC Team Celebrates Sustainable Gastronomy Day

In observance of Sustainable Gastronomy Day and in alignment with this month’s theme of Environment and Sustainability, the QAIC team visited an urban farm to celebrate and learn about sustainable practices. Located in the LeDroit Park neighborhood of Washington, DC, Common Good City Farm uses sustainable urban agricultural practices and encompasses all parts of the food system, including food production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste management. 

We also had the privilege to hear from our two special guests: Bill Grant, a former Chargé D’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Doha, Qatar, and Nate Mook, the current CEO of World Central Kitchen

 
 
 

Fashion Designer Naeem Khan Visits QAIC

In anticipation of our upcoming theme of Fashion in September, QAIC had the privilege to sit down with renowned fashion designer, Naeem Khan, as part of QAIC’s Expression Art & Culture Talk series to learn about Khan’s early life around fashion, his biggest influences, and the connection he’s made with Qatar through fashion. Following the interview moderated by QAIC Board of Directors member and former Chair of Fashion Design at VCUarts - Qatar, Sandra Wilkins, Khan was given a tour of QAIC’s current exhibitions before joining the QAIC team and some special guests for “high tea” and hors d’oeuvres.

Stay tuned for future updates as to the release of this exclusive interview where you’ll learn more about Naeem Khan’s emergence as one of the world’s most prominent fashion designers and his experiences dressing and designing for female icons, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Queen Noor of Jordan, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Alif Ba Exhibition Debuts in Philadelphia at Al Bustan Seeds for Culture

On June 4th, the Qatar America Institute for Culture joined partner Al Bustan Seeds of Culture to celebrate the arrival of the "Alif Ba" exhibition in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perry World House. Attendees of the event included a diverse array of families from various backgrounds who were able to enjoy a large number of activities ranging from learning about the art of calligraphy to taking part in cultural practices such as the art of henna (native to South Asia and the Middle East), along with Tabla drum lessons that were followed by a percussion performance by musicians from the Philadelphia community.

 
 

Whale Sharks in Qatar: A Natural Phenomenon

Qatar is home to one of the largest populations of whale sharks in the ocean, and what was once a restricted marine zone off the coast is now open to the public. In partnership with Qatar Tourism, Discover Qatar is set to launch whale shark viewing experiences for locals, residents, and tourists. Click the link below to learn more about the experience. 

 
 

'Qatar Creates' Announces Cultural Offerings Ahead of the 2022 World Cup

For the first time and in the new format of Qatar’s cultural offerings for autumn 2022, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani stated, “As the countdown intensifies toward the opening of the World Cup, we are delighted to share a picture of autumn 2022 in Doha, when the calendar will be overflowing with museum exhibitions, premier fashion events, spectacular music and theater experiences, and eye-opening previews of the exciting cultural future that Qatar is building today." Raise Your Green Card for the Planet

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, shows a video of him holding up a "Green Card for the Planet" in commemoration of World Environment Day on June 5th. The initiative is intended to boost awareness about environmental protection ahead of the 2022 World Cup hosted in Qatar.
